Important Update: Changes to MN Medicare Commissions

Several Medicare carriers in Minnesota have recently announced they will no longer pay commissions to independent agents on certain plans. This shift has a real impact on small, local agencies like ours. Independent agents play a critical role in helping Minnesotans understand their Medicare options, compare benefits, and avoid costly mistakes—but without commissions, many agents may be unable to continue offering guidance on these plans.

At CAL Financial, our commitment remains the same: We advocate for you—not the carriers.

However, these changes limit which plans we fully support.

What This Means for You

  • We can assist residents with enrollment in an Allina Health | Aetna Medicare plan, a Medicare Supplement, or a Part D prescription drug plan. We’re also happy to answer any follow-up questions or provide general guidance to help you make informed decisions about your coverage.

  • If you’re an Allina Health | Aetna patient, or if you’d like to discuss Medicare Supplement or Part D plans, we can schedule a convenient time for you to talk with one of our licensed advisors. You can reach us directly at 763-703-5380.

  • Starting in 2026, most carriers other than Allina Health | Aetna will not be paying broker commissions for Medicare Advantage plans. Additionally, Blue Cross Blue Shield will not be paying any broker commissions on any of their plans — including Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Part D plans. These changes are largely due to UCare exiting the market and other carriers adjusting their compensation structures.

  • Because of these changes, our team will be focusing on helping residents with Allina Health | Aetna plans, as well as non-BCBS Medicare Supplement and Part D options. We’re still happy to provide general guidance to help you understand your coverage options.

What You Can Do

Your voice matters. If you value independent, personalized Medicare help, we encourage you to:

  • Contact your legislators and share your concern about these commission cuts and the impact on consumer choice.
  • Reach out to carriers directly to ask why they are removing agent support.
  • Stay connected with us so we can help you navigate these changes and explore the plans we are still authorized to service.
